PEORIA April Meeting: WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO BUILD A MASS ANTIWAR MOVEMENT? - 2pm CT

  • Peoria Library Lincoln Branch 1312 West Lincoln Avenue Peoria, IL, 61605 United States (map)

Join Workers Strike Back for our monthly Peoria meeting to discuss the strategy needed to build a mass antiwar movement.

Trump has careened from threatening the annihilation of a ‘Whole Civilization” in Iran to announcing a tenuous two-week ceasefire. Meanwhile, Israel is still bombing Lebanon with U.S.-funded weapons and political support from the Democrats and Republicans and the American billionaire class.

Trump’s brutal war — funded by BIPARTISAN votes for the near 1 trillion dollar war budget in 2025 — has unleashed death and destruction in the Middle East. The war has already cost over 3,600 Iranian lives, many of them women and children. The Israeli state’s assault on Lebanon has killed more than 1,500. Over a hundred have lost their lives in Iraq during the current conflict.

Mass anger against imperialist war is at an unprecedented high, with a majority of American working people registering opposition even before Trump launched the war on Iran. An estimated nine million people marched at the March 28th No Kings protest, with opposition to the war on Iran as one of the primary factors fueling the protest. The majority has also been opposed to U.S. funding of the Israeli military, an unprecedented historical turn since the formation of the Israeli state 80 years ago and decades of anti-Palestinian, pro-Zionist propaganda.

Yet, even with the mass of American working and young people ready to fight back, a mass antiwar movement is conspicuously absent. The leadership of the labor movement, especially, and of liberal organizations has refused to build any organized, ongoing opposition to the war. The principal reason for this is that these leaders are overwhelmingly tied to the Democratic Party, which is responsible for the wars along with the Republican Party, and who have historically had an equally warmongering approach toward Iran.

A mass antiwar movement can only be built on an independent basis, with a leadership which is prepared to fight back against both warmongering parties of U.S. capitalism.

Workers Strike Back is a rare organization bringing this analysis forward. Building a mass antiwar movement is extremely urgent both to stop the horrors in the Middle East, and to prevent more wars, including against the working people in nations like Cuba and Venezuela.

RSVP for our monthly meeting of Workers Strike Back to get organized and fight back against both parties of imperialist war.
