Our Renters’ Bill of Rights
Democrats on Seattle City Council are trying to repeal our Renters’ Bill of Rights. These victories were won by former Seattle Councilmember and Workers Strike Back founder Kshama Sawant, and a movement of thousands of working people, during the ten years of Kshama’s socialist council office.
These are some of the landmark renters’ victories we won, and that now we need to defend:
Last year, the Democrats on Seattle City Council attempted to dismantle our historic $15/hour minimum wage. Workers Strike Back defeated them. Now the Democrats are attacking our renters’ rights on behalf of billionaire corporate landlords.
The Democrats’ goal is to dismantle the Renters’ Bill of Rights won by Kshama Sawant and Seattle’s working people during Kshama’s 10 years as the only socialist on Seattle City Council. These landmark victories include: Capping late rent fees at $10/month, six months’ notice for rent increases, banning winter & schoolyear evictions, limiting move-in fees, allowing payment plans, and more.
As a first step towards dismantling these protections, Council Democrats are trying to shred the council’s ethics rules, by allowing landlord councilmembers to vote on repealing renters’ rights. We won our victories — including $15, the Amazon Tax, and our Renters’ Bill of Rights — with a fighting movement against big business, corporate landlords, and the Democratic Party.. It will also take a fighting movement to stop these attacks.
